Testalonga Mielie Green was inspired by winemaker Craig Hawkins’ daughter, Camilla (affectionately nicknamed “Mielie”). Crafted from Chenin Blanc grapes grown on organically farmed, dryland bush vines in Swartland, the 2024 vintage benefitted from a wet winter with 637mm of rainfall, followed by a dry period from October to March. Despite initial concerns, high soil moisture and diligent vineyard management preserved the wine’s vibrant acidity and balanced pH. Hand-harvested in early February, the grapes were cold-stored, whole-bunch pressed, and then fermented in stainless steel tanks and small barrels. Aged on its gross lees for 11 months, the wine was lightly filtered with a small addition of SO₂ prior to bottling. 4,500 bottles were produced. Residual sugar: 5.6 g/l. Bottled at 12%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: A vibrant and expressive bouquet emerges with bright aromas of citrus peel and green apple, interwoven with hints of tropical fruit and delicate floral nuances. Subtle toastiness from its brief barrel contact adds an intriguing layer of complexity.
Palate: On the palate, the wine reveals layers of orchard fruit and zesty lemon, complemented by a whisper of honeyed sweetness that enhances its off-dry character. The texture is rich and nuanced, a reflection of its extended lees aging which imparts a gentle creaminess.
Finish: The finish is long and precise, characterized by a refreshing burst of bright acidity and a subtle mineral lift that carries the fruit forward, leaving a balanced and memorable impression.
