Grapes for McFarlane Monday's Child Chenin Blanc 2023 were harvested from two old vine blocks in Stellenbosch. The smallest portion comes from the Bankrotsteen block on Karibib farm in the Polkadraai region. This block is planted on decomposed granite and experiences great influence from the False Bay Ocean nearby. The biggest portion of fruit that goes into this wine comes from Geluksoord closer to the Bottelary sub-region. This old block of bushvines is more North-East facing on koffie-klip and red clay. Fruit is then harvested from both blocks between 21.5 Brix and 22.5 Brix. The fruit is transported to the cellar and spends overnight in the chiller before processing. Both batches were whole bunch pressed to a stainless steel tank for light settling overnight. From here the juice was racked to big old French oak barrels where natural fermentation was allowed to start on its own. Once the wine was dry it was stirred on its gross lees for 9 months without sulphur. Just before bottling it was racked, sulphured up and protein stabilised. The wine was gently filtered before bottling. Residual sugar: 2.2g/l. Bottled at 13%. (Bottle size 750ml)
Nose: Poached quince and fresh apricots greet the nose, accented by delicate florals and a hint of spice.
Palate: The palate delivers fleshy yellow fruit interwoven with savoury spice, while vibrant acidity and tangy notes ensure the wine remains both bright and enticing. This balance of flavours underlines the wine's impressive aging potential.
Finish: A long, vibrant finish unfolds with lingering tangy fruit and subtle spice, leading to a clean, refreshing aftertaste that invites another sip.
