DESCRIPTION

The Waterford Estate The Jem 2017 is the flagship Bordeaux-style blend from Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Named after estate owner Jeremy "Jem" Ord, this iconic wine represents the pinnacle of the estate's blending philosophy, bringing together eight estate-grown varietals to express the diversity of the Helderberg terroir. The 2017 vintage is composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Shiraz, 7% Merlot, 6% Mourvèdre, 5% Sangiovese, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Barbera. Each component was vinified separately before being blended six months after fermentation and matured for 20 months in 225L and 300L French oak barrels, 19% of which were new. Bottled at 13.5% ABV.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Bold and expressive, with concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and red berries layered with vanilla oak, crushed violets, clove spice, herbaceous fynbos and subtle savoury nuances.

Palate: Luxurious and beautifully textured, revealing rich dark fruit supported by velvety tannins and vibrant natural acidity. The Cabernet Sauvignon backbone provides structure, while the remaining seven varietals add layers of complexity, elegance and remarkable balance, all seamlessly integrated with refined French oak.

Finish: Long, mineral-driven and exceptionally elegant, with lingering dark fruit, refined oak spice and silky tannins that promise outstanding ageing potential of 5–25 years.
