The limited release for 2022's Ardbeg Day, Ardcore draws inspiration from the brand’s punk past, with Islay’s main port, Port Ellen, allegedly going by the nickname ‘Punk Ellen’ in the 1970s. Crafted with heavily roasted (aka black) malt, which is a first for the distillery. Non-chillfiltered and bottled at 46%.
Nose: Fresh, floral, herbal and tart. Hints of mixed herbs and cedar wood. Very zesty, vibrant, hints of smoked orange and grapefruit, lots of menthol and peppermint.
Palate: A lively, vibrant, sharp, ‘zingy’ texture, leading into very firm, distinctive flavours – malty/biscuit tones, powerful aniseed, cardamon, antiseptic lozenge, sweet mint toffee and cigar ash.
Finish: Finally, a lingering, salty, firm aftertaste of mint, tar, oak tannin & leather.
