Beaumont Cape Vintage 2018 was produced from a blend of Tinta Barocca and Pinotage picked at 26° Balling, from vineyards 44 years old. Inoculation was done after two days of skin maceration with WE 372 yeast. After two days of regular punching down the wine was hard pressed at 11° Balling, crushed by foot in open concrete tanks. Intense crushing is key to optimal extraction of flavour, colour and tannin prior to fortification with wine spirit at 9° Balling. Maturation took place in 300-litre 6th-filled French oak barrels for two years. Unfiltered and unfined as per the 'traditional' style, with minimal sulphur use. 1,332 bottles were produced. Residual sugar 80.8g/l. Bottled at 17%. (Bottle size 375ml)

Nose: Intense aromas of cinnamon, blueberry and blackberry.

Palate: Fruit forward with a lovely cooked fruit intensity. Plums, cherries, blackberries and blueberry compote.

Finish: Sweet spices such star anise, cloves and cinnamon. Full bodied with a focused tannin structure and long finish.

Port is a geographically protected indication, meaning that to be called port it must be made in a specific region of Portugal. Thus, this is not technically a port wine, however, South African has a long tradition of producing port-styled wines in exactly the same process as is done in Portugal.
