Alan is an icon of the industry — a Whisky Hall of Fame inductee, revered Master Distiller, and one of the most knowledgeable individuals in Scotch whisky. His expertise spans not only near-exhaustive production knowledge but also a remarkable command of whisky history. Beginning his journey in 1975 as a tour guide at Glenfarclas, Alan rose through the ranks to helm some of Speyside’s most iconic distilleries, including Glenlivet, Aberlour, Strathisla, and Longmorn. He also played a leading role in the reopening of Glen Keith and the creation of Dalmunach. Today, he continues to shape the future of whisky as a distillery advisor, consulting on new projects both in Scotland and beyond — while also hunting down century-old illicit distillery ruins hidden in the hills of Speyside.
