The second Three Ships release in the annual Master's Collection is a 15yo blend that was finished/part-matured in Pinotage casks. For the non-wine drinker (like us), Pinotage is a uniquely South African wine cultivar; which then makes perfect sense as to why Andy Watts, whisky-maker extraordinaire of Three Ships (and Bain's), would use such casks. Only 4,000 bottles were produced, with 3,500 available for sale (the remaining 500 were allocated to marketing activities, should you be wondering).

The grain and malt components of the whisky were first matured separately in American oak, ex-bourbon casks before being finish for different periods (~5 years for the malt and ~2 years for the grain), in European oak casks that previously held Pinotage. The blend has a healthy malt ratio of ~35%, is non-chillfiltered, naturally coloured and bottled at 46.2%.

"Was first introduced to this whisky at whisky live in Cape Town. Has become one of my favorite from Three Three ships stable, complex yet smooth and sophisticated. definitely one too add to the collection"

BRAVO THREE SHIPS!

"A brilliant accomplishment for Andy and the team at the James Sedgwick Distillery on all accounts. This whisky is rich but elegant, and beautifully balances the grain, malt and Pinotage influence. An absolutely stunning whisky, and without doubt one of the best releases of 2016! Yes, it's 'expensive' for a Three Ships, but considering the amazing liquid and the limited nature of this release, it is money well spent, and you can bet it won't be around for very long. Get it while you can; I can't recommend this enough."
