Nose: Fruity with hints of vanilla and oak.

Palate: Sweet vanilla and honey.

Finish: Long finish and well-balanced with oak and sweet spices.

The Inventer is the legacy of Johan Venter, an icon in South Africa's brandy industry. After retiring from Distell in 2019, where he was the chief of its Centre of Excellence: Intrinsics, Johan spent time in Scotland refining blends and developing new products for three international whisky distilleries owned by Distell, namely Tobermory, Deanston and Bunnahabhain. The Inventer reflects Johan's personal hand and ingenuity, creating spirits that are uniquely South African.

"I had to come back to adjust my rating. This is a morish, layered, unique South African grain experience."

Get it it!

"This is, essentially, a barrel pick of 8-year-old Bain’s. It's more distinctive from the standard Bain’s than I remember the Bain’s 15 being, and a notch or two better. It’s definitely in the same narrow band of creamy vanilla, though more toasted, the edges sanded down. Toasted, as in the scent of wood after being buzzsawed, or a stick after roasting a marshmallow. There’s a note of toffee, and a note of chocolate orange creams, though the latter only showed up when sipping alongside the standard Bain’s. Before the comparison, there was only a vague hint of orange-leaning citrus. Get it while the getting's good."
