Rye whiskey dates back to the 1800’s, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with rye whiskey and bitters. The drink became known as the Sazerac from which this whisky, produced by Buffalo Trace, takes it name. Bottled at 45%.

Nose: Clove, vanilla, anise and pepper

Palate: Thick and juicy with syrupy notes of ripe citrus and candied spices.

Finish: A big finish with hints of licorice and tingling sweet spices.

Spicy & full of flavour

"This could quickly become a favourite. Nice mix of sweetness with cinnamon spice, and a rich citrus finish. Another excellent offering from the Buffalo Trace distillery."

Spiced Orange Syrup

"Robust clove spice sprinkled with grated orange rind all on a blanket of rose potpourri meets the nose. Deep, full, earthy rye flavour on the palate with some more spiciness and syrup. A continuation of the sappy syrup notes and subtler spice on the finish. Definitely benefits from the 45% abv. This is a nice bottle at a nice price here. I would highly recommend it, especially if you haven't tried a rye whiskey before."

Delicious Dram

"A delicious rye, hosting all the traditional flavours you'd expect. Some citrus peels, vanilla and nutmeg on the nose. The palate starts flat and develops into a crescendo of spices and sweetness with a long peppery finish. Recommended as a good daily drinking rye."

Kyle B. (4/5)

Delightfully Orange

"An amazing rye that still carries enough of the signature from Buffalo Trace that you can tell their related, at least somewhat. The palate delivers a prominent orange flavour which is always a pleasant surprise. If you haven't tried a Rye this is a fantastic place to start."

Representative

"I think this one can be a rep for Rey style whisky.. it is a typical bourbon with added baking spices, very enjoyable.."

THANKFULLY WE HAVE SAZERAC

"Sadly the selection of rye in SA is dismal, but thankfully, from the talented folk at Buffalo Trace, we have Sazerac! Saw dust, abundant (but tamed) rye spice with cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger, charred oak and an underlying sweetness of orange syrup. Apparently it's good in cocktails, but to be honest it's great enough to drink neat."
