DESCRIPTION

A lightly peated permanent expression from the Highland Park distillery on Orkney, first introduced in the 1970s as the first whisky in their core range. It now arrives in redesigned packaging that moves on from the brand's previous Viking-inspired look in favour of a cleaner design drawn from Orkney's landscape, rolled out in late-2024. Matured in a combination of first-fill sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, with additional refill casks. Naturally coloured and bottled at 40%. (Bottle size 750ml)

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Fresh, clean and floral, with heathered honey and a touch of citrus.

Palate: Sweet and spicy, with toasty notes of burnt orange, jasmine and fruitcake.

Finish: Long, with peppery spice, woody notes and orange zest, and a subtle aromatic kick of smoke from Orkney heathered peat.

A subtle delicacy

"I haven't tried a bottle under the old branding, so I cannot comment on the difference between the older and newer version. However, based on my first encounter and impressions, I would say that it still holds up somewhat to its reputation as a good, well-rounded single malt. Nothing is over the top, and the small amount of gentle heather peat mixes in well with the soft sweetness and honey notes. If there is anyone with a particularly sensitive palate and sense of smell who don't want to be overwhelmed by the phenolic peatiness of an extremely smoky whisky, then it would do them good to start with this bottling."

Perfect for a Hot Toddy

"Like sucking down honey from the jar. There's some peat smoke in there, but barely. Sometimes I think I get something else, maybe a general oak note, or maybe just organic bits in the honey."

Great entry to the world of Peat

"Creamy honey and light smoke on the nose. Palate reveals light aromatic spices, some citrus and wood shavings. Gorgeous!!"
