Glenmorangie Spios (pronounced ‘spee-oss’) is the 9th annual limited release in Glenmorangie's Private Edition range. Spios is Scots Gaelic for ‘spice’ and refers to the spicy notes imparted from full maturation in American ex-rye whiskey casks. Non-chillfiltered and bottled at 46%.

Nose: Fresh and herbal, with hints of cherry, clove, mint toffee and scents of green grass.

Taste: Rye’s spice bursts forth on the palate, bringing tastes of toffee, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg, alongside buttery vanilla.

Finish: Rich, sweet and lingering with more toffee, Brazil nut and a suggestion of citrus.

Collector bias rules

"LVMH have a knack of punting a lot of hype leading to expectations of a 25year in a NAS bottle, more likely a 12year old or thereabouts. So, if you follow the hype, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, try the Spios on its own merits, there are numerous spicy complexities which unravel and lead to a very pleasant dram. At this point in time, due to its limited release and declining availability, it is rapidly becoming a collector piece. Pleased I bought a couple of them."

Interesting, but a little flat

"I was excited to try this whisky, I love rye and I love weird releases but I found this expression a little lacking in punch for the price. It's certainly tasty and there's definitely some unique flavours and some nuance to be discerned if you spend enough time with it. Its a typical, sweet dessert whisky just like most Glenmorangies but with some added vegetal and spice notes. I get the clove and nutmeg more than cinnamon. It's great after a strongly cloved piece of boerewors. I think it could've really benefited from an extra few years in the barrel though, at 12 years old it may have been worth the price."
