DESCRIPTION
Sourced from a single vineyard pocket on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, at 287m elevation on decomposed Bokkeveld shale over clay-loam soils, this Pinot Noir reflects both precision and place. Named in honour of JC Martin’s daughter, Emma, this wine represents a collaboration between father and daughter. Vines (17–19 years old, clone 115) were hand-harvested at the end of February 2023 following a long, steady ripening season. Spontaneous fermentation included 50% whole-bunch in large foudre, with maturation for 12 months in 40% new and 60% second-fill French oak. Only 3,635 bottles were produced. Bottled at 13.5%. (Bottle size 750ml)
TASTING NOTES
Nose: Captivating and perfumed, with lifted red cherry, cranberry, and wild strawberry at the fore. Underpinned by subtle rose petal, savoury spice, and a delicate graphite note.
Palate: Silken and precise, offering layers of red berries and pomegranate interwoven with forest floor, clove, and a touch of smoky oak. The whole-bunch component lends fine spice and structure, while the fruit retains purity and brightness.
Finish: Elegant and persistent, carried by supple tannins and a fine seam of acidity. A lingering echo of red fruit and savoury spice defines the close, hinting at both grace in youth and the potential for measured cellaring.
